Recreation
The MSA recognizes that students are giving up their summer to participate in important research studies, so much effort is put into developing an extensive recreational program for evenings and weekends. The residence is supplied with an abundance of movies, sports equipment, video games and student directed activities that take place during the week. Some of our weekend activities include a rowing clinic, hiking, river cruise, participation in the Pinawa irthday weekend parade, and trips to Grand Beach and Winnipeg. The cost of recreational activities and travel is included in the program fee.
Residence
The Wilderness Edge Retreat and Conference Centre provides a homelike atmosphere to the MSA students during their six week stay in Pinawa. The MSA strives to create an environment which will prepare the students for university living, therefor the residence is a dormitory style facility simulated to a comparable atmosphere. The residence is co-ed and is staffed with one male and one female Residence Supervisor. These individuals are senior university students with Resident Don experience and they reside at, and participate in, all activities at the residence with the students. Students will be paired up as room mates based on gender, age, compatibility and interests. Student rooms are large with ample storage space, so students are encouraged to bring personal belongings that will personalize their living space and make them feel at home. Long distance plans are purchased by MSA so the students have telephone access to friends and family. The MSA also provides computer labs at the residence, one for report preparation and the second is fully equipped with high speed internet service for easy access email contact. Washrooms and showers are communal, and private bath areas are aslo available. Bedding and towels are supplied, but students should pack a beach towel or two for the six week term. The residence has a communal kitchen and an eating area which is also used for lunch preparation during the week. Residence Supervisors do the grocery shopping and ensure the residence is adequately supplied. Students are encouraged to request food preferences which will accomodated wherever possible. Students are responsible for breakfast in the mornings and for preparing their bag lunches during the weekdays. Supper meals during the week are provided by local community groups and are served at a variety of facilities in Pinawa. Weekend meals are much more casual, utilizing the courtyard and bar-b-que facilities at the Wilderness Edge. Students with an interest in cooking or baking are encouraged to work with peers and the residence staff in weekend meal preparation. The students are often away from the residence for recreational venues during the weekends. These outings include the cost of restaurant meals. All accomodation and meals are provided by MSA, and are included in the program fee.
